Design in the 2020s

Some predictions for a new decade.

It’s that time again. A new year is already starting.

This one is quite special, isn’t it? We’re not just stepping into a new year, but onto a whole new decade.

Although, I don’t know about you, but December 2019 and January 2020 feel pretty similar to me. Nothing ever changes overnight, and new year is in fact quite an arbitrary, manmade concept.

Yet, the first day, week or month of a new decade, do hold some kind of special momentum. The beginning of a new year nudges us to reflect on how things went down and what the future might hold.

This past couple of weeks, trend articles and state-of-affairs pieces are flooding my inbox and newsfeeds like never before.

What the 2020s will be like for designers?

Apparently blockchain becomes mainstream. Designers finally crack best practices in AR. Design gets highly collaborative (and still agile, for sure). Forget apps, it’s now all about design systems. Artificial intelligence gets embedded into everything and voice becomes a major interaction medium.

Or was that 2019?

Last year I tried convincing people to pay for their apps and prayed for an open, fair, and unbiased internet…
